ToneX is a capture-based modeler: instead of parametric amp models, you load Tone Models — AI captures of real amps and pedals. So the first choice is always which Tone Model to load, then you shape it with the onboard Gain, Volume and 3-band EQ. Thousands of free Tone Models live on ToneNET.
Load the right Tone Model first. This is the biggest decision. Search ToneNET (or the bundled library) for a capture of the amp you want: a <b>Fender/Deluxe</b> capture for clean, a <b>Marshall/Plexi or JCM800</b> capture for crunch, a <b>Mesa Rectifier / 5150</b> capture for high gain. The model sets the core voice; the knobs fine-tune it.
Metal / high-gain. Load a high-gain capture (5150, Rectifier, Diezel). Keep <b>Gain</b> moderate — captures already include the amp’s gain, so pushing it hard adds fizz. Bass ~5–6, Mid 4–5 (slight scoop), Treble 5–6. Add a noise gate block and, if available, a Tone Model of a Tube Screamer in front to tighten the low end.
Rock / hard rock. Load a Plexi, JCM800 or AC30 capture. Gain 5–6, Bass 5, Mid 6, Treble 6. Keep the mids up so the riff cuts; a light drive capture in front adds sustain.
Blues / classic rock. Load a lower-gain Fender or Vox capture. Gain 3–4, Bass 5, Mid 6–7, Treble 5–6. Ride your guitar volume — a good capture cleans up just like the real amp when you roll back.
Clean. Load a Twin Reverb, Deluxe or JC-120 capture. Gain 1–2, Bass 5, Mid 5, Treble 6, add a little reverb. Great as a pedal platform and for funk, pop and jangle.
Cab / IR and levels. ToneX captures usually include the cab. If you use a captured amp “head” only, add a cab IR. Watch output level when going into a real amp’s front end (use the amp-in-the-room / cab-off setting) versus straight to a PA or interface (cab on).
💡 On ToneX the Tone Model does most of the work — pick a capture of the actual amp before touching a knob. Keep gain lower than on a modeling amp, because the capture already bakes in the amp’s drive.
