The Rickenbacker — the 330/360 in particular — has a bright, chiming, bell-like jangle with a compressed high end, thanks to its single-coil “toaster” or hi-gain pickups and semi-hollow body. It’s the sound of The Beatles, The Byrds, R.E.M. and Tom Petty, and the 4001 bass has its own growling, trebly voice.
