Mid + Mid FreqMidrange level plus a sweepable centre frequency — the key to making it musical.
Tips
The classic mistake is scooping the mids to zero — that is where the "harsh, buzzy" reputation comes from. Push the Mid up past halfway and it becomes a thick, cutting metal tone.
You do not need Dist maxed; around 5–6 is already very heavy and stays tighter.
Famous uses
Nu-metal and metalcore rhythm tones; a rite-of-passage first metal distortion.
Try Level at unity, Dist around 5, Low 6, High 5, and — crucially — Mid up around 6 with the Mid Freq near the middle. Keeping the mids present (not scooped) is what makes the Metal Zone sound thick and cut through instead of harsh.
Why does the Metal Zone sound so harsh?
Almost always because the Mid control is scooped to zero and the Dist is maxed. Push the Mid up past halfway, sweep the Mid Freq for body, and back the Dist to around 5–6 — it transforms into a usable, cutting distortion.
