Jazz tone is warm, round and dark — the opposite of twang. It comes almost entirely from the neck pickup with the tone rolled down into a clean amp, not from any pedal.
Use the neck pickup. The neck humbucker (or the neck position on any guitar) is the warmest, roundest voice — this is where nearly all traditional jazz tone lives.
Roll the tone knob down. Back the guitar’s tone control down to roughly 3–5. This rolls off the highs for that classic dark, woody archtop sound.
Play clean, with low gain. A clean tube amp with the gain low keeps every note distinct for complex chords and fast lines. No overdrive — jazz tone is fully clean.
Favour mids, ease off treble. Keep mids up for body and roll treble back so the tone is smooth, not brittle. A hollow or semi-hollow body adds natural warmth and resonance.
Add a little reverb only. A small amount of reverb adds air and space. Skip heavy effects — clarity and warmth are the whole point.
Consider flatwound strings. Flatwound strings tame string noise and add a smooth, thumpy warmth that fits jazz far better than bright roundwounds.
