The oldest amp debate. Tube (valve) amps make their gain with vacuum tubes; solid-state amps use transistors. Tubes are prized for a warm, dynamic feel and musical natural distortion; solid-state amps are lighter, cheaper, more reliable and consistent — and modern ones sound far better than their reputation.

Not automatically. Tube amps are loved for warm, dynamic distortion and a touch-sensitive feel from power-tube sag — the traditional benchmark. Solid-state amps are lighter, cheaper, more reliable and stay clean at high volume, making them a great pedal platform, and modern ones sound very good. Pick by the feel and tone you want, not by the technology name.
